Quarterly estimated taxes and the 15.3% self-employment tax

The IRS says you generally must pay estimated tax if you expect to owe at least $1,000 for the year after withholding and refundable credits. For a calendar year the due dates are April 15, June 15, September 15, and January 15 of the next year. A date that falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday moves to the next business day.

Self-employment tax is separate from income tax. The rate is 15.3%: 12.4% Social Security and 2.9% Medicare. It applies to 92.35% of net earnings. You can deduct one-half of the self-employment tax when you figure adjusted gross income. Gig platforms do not withhold this for 1099 payouts, so the quarterly payment is how most 1099 workers send it in.
