Frequently asked questions

How is a sole proprietor SEP calculated?

IRS Publication 560 reduces net profit by half of self-employment tax, then applies a rate that works out to about 20% of that net. The statutory cap is 25% of compensation, and the dollar cap for 2026 is $72,000. This calculator uses the 20% approximation and labels it as one.

Can I have a SEP IRA and a Roth IRA?

Yes, if you have earned income and you are under the Roth IRA income phase-out. The SEP contribution does not use up the Roth IRA dollar limit. The two accounts have different rules.

Is this the same math as the Solo 401(k) calculator?

Yes. This page leads with the SEP result. The Solo 401(k) comparison stays on the page so you can see the employee deferral a SEP does not have.
