The third and fourth brackets share the same 4.55% rate in 2026. Under LB 754 (2023), the top rate is scheduled to fall to 3.99% in 2027.
- State estimated tax
- Residents and nonresidents must pay estimated tax if their Nebraska income tax (after personal exemption credits) is expected to exceed their withholding and other credits by $500 or more. Same dates as federal (April 15, 2026; June 15, 2026; September 15, 2026; January 15, 2027). Farmers and ranchers may pay all by January 15, 2027, or file and pay in full by March 1, 2027. - Any construction business, including sole proprietors and LLCs, that earns more than $5,000 a year doing or arranging construction work in Nebraska must register with the Department of Labor, at $25 a year. Self-employed people who pay no more than $3,000 a year to others can claim a fee exemption. Failing to register brings penalties of up to $500 for a first violation and $5,000 after that.

- In construction and delivery services, a worker is presumed to be an employee unless all three are true: the worker is free from control, the work is outside the company's usual business and done off its premises, and the worker is customarily in an independent business. Penalties are up to $500 per misclassified worker for a first violation and up to $5,000 after that.
Federal rules for 2026
No tax on tips (2025 to 2028)
Eligible workers in occupations that customarily receive tips can deduct up to $25,000 of qualified tips a year from federal taxable income, whether or not they itemize. The deduction shrinks for modified AGI over $150,000 ($300,000 joint). It is income tax only: Social Security and Medicare still apply to tips.
Tips must be reported
Employees must report cash tips of $20 or more in a month to their employer by the 10th of the next month. Tips you did not report go on Form 4137. Only reported tips count toward the deduction.
Overtime deduction
W-2 workers who are owed overtime under federal law can also deduct the overtime premium, up to $12,500 a year ($25,000 joint), with the same income phase-out.
Roth IRA
Without a workplace plan, a Roth IRA lets you save up to $7,500 in 2026 ($8,600 at 50 or older) and withdraw qualified money tax-free in retirement, subject to income limits.
