W-2 or 1099?

Catering companies often hire W-2 staff. Shift apps vary: Instawork, Qwick and Wonolo label each shift as 1099 or W-2, while Shiftsmart uses independent contractors. 1099 shifts mean self-employment tax and no withholding.

Set aside for 1099 shifts

Contractor shifts carry 15.3% self-employment tax on 92.35% of net profit, plus income tax. Half of SE tax is deductible in figuring AGI.

Forms you may or may not get

For 2026, a business only has to send a 1099-NEC once it pays you $2,000 or more. You still must report every dollar, even with no form.

Tips at events

Voluntary tips in a listed occupation, such as non-restaurant food and beverage servers (TTOC 103), can count toward the up-to-$25,000 deduction. Catering service charges and auto-gratuities do not.

Mileage between venues

For 1099 work, business miles between gigs can be deducted at 72.5 cents per mile (Jan-Jun 2026) or 76 cents (Jul-Dec 2026) with a mileage log. Commuting from home to a regular workplace generally isn't deductible.

Event staff and catering server questions, answered

Am I an employee or a contractor on shift apps?+

It depends on the app and the shift. Instawork, Qwick and Wonolo label each shift as 1099 or W-2, and W-2 shifts withhold tax. Your pay stubs and year-end forms show which.

When are 2026 quarterly taxes due?+

April 15, June 15 and Sept. 15, 2026, and Jan. 15, 2027. You generally need to pay if you'll owe $1,000 or more after withholding.

Can a part-time event worker open a Solo 401(k) or SEP IRA?+

Yes, if you have self-employment income, though contributions can't exceed what your net self-employment earnings allow. 2026 caps are a $24,500 employee deferral for a Solo 401(k) and $72,000 in total annual additions; an IRA allows $7,500.

Can I deduct black pants, non-slip shoes, or a wine key?+

For 1099 work, ordinary and necessary business costs go on Schedule C. Clothing is generally deductible only if it isn't suitable for everyday wear. W-2 employees generally can't deduct unreimbursed job expenses federally.
