W-2 or 1099?

Pet sitters booking through Rover, Wag or their own clients are generally independent contractors who file Schedule C and pay self-employment tax. Staff at a pet care business may be W-2 employees.

Platform forms have changed

Payment apps and marketplaces only send a 1099-K for 2026 when payments exceed $20,000 and 200 transactions. Income below that is still taxable and must be reported.

Deduct the costs of caring for pets

Leashes, treats, waste bags, platform fees and business mileage (72.5 cents Jan–Jun, 76 cents Jul–Dec 2026) are deductible. If part of your home is used regularly and exclusively for the business, the simplified home office method allows $5 per sq. ft., up to $1,500.

Self-employment tax and quarterlies

You owe 15.3% SE tax on 92.35% of net profit once net earnings reach $400. If you expect to owe $1,000+, pay 2026 estimates April 15, June 15, Sept. 15, 2026 and Jan. 15, 2027.

Retirement for sitters

A Solo 401(k) allows up to $24,500 in 2026 deferrals plus employer contributions, within $72,000 total. A Roth IRA allows $7,500 ($8,600 if 50+).

Will Rover send me a tax form?+

For 2026, a 1099-K is only required when payments exceed $20,000 and 200 transactions. Check your platform's tax center either way and report all income.

Can I deduct driving to pet owners' homes?+

Yes, business trips count at 72.5 cents per mile (Jan–Jun 2026) or 76 cents (Jul–Dec 2026). Driving from home to your first client may be commuting if your home isn't your principal place of business.

Do I get the 20% QBI deduction?+

Most self-employed pet sitters can, since pet care is not a specified service business. A minimum $400 deduction applies starting 2026 if you have at least $1,000 of QBI and materially participate.

Can pet sitters deduct tips?+

Yes, pet sitters and walkers are on the IRS tipped occupation list (code 506), so voluntary tips can qualify for a deduction of up to $25,000 for 2025–2028. For self-employed sitters it can't exceed your net profit from the business.
