W-2 or 1099?

App-based bike couriers are usually 1099 independent contractors who report earnings on Schedule C and pay self-employment tax. Some courier companies hire W-2 employees, whose taxes are withheld and who do not file Schedule C for that job.

No tax on tips applies to couriers

Goods delivery people, including bicycle couriers and app-based delivery workers, are on the IRS tipped occupation list. You can deduct up to $25,000 of qualified voluntary tips for 2025-2028, phasing out above $150,000 MAGI ($300,000 joint).

For contractors, the tip deduction is capped by profit

Self-employed couriers cannot deduct more tips than the net income of the delivery business. The deduction is claimed on Schedule 1-A, not as a Schedule C expense, so it does not shrink the profit your self-employment tax is figured on.

Bike and gear are business expenses

The standard mileage rate is for cars, vans and trucks, so cyclists deduct actual costs instead: the business-use share of the bike or e-bike, repairs, locks, bags, lights and your phone plan.

Small profits still owe SE tax

Self-employment tax of 15.3% on 92.35% of net profit applies once net earnings reach $400. A Roth IRA allows $7,500 for 2026 to start saving.

Bike courier questions, answered

Do bike delivery tips qualify for no tax on tips?+

Yes. Goods delivery people, with bicycle couriers and app-based delivery named as examples, are on the Treasury tipped occupation list. Voluntary tips qualify up to $25,000 per return; claim it on Schedule 1-A whether or not you itemize. Tips must show on a 1099 or W-2 or be reported by you.

Can I use the IRS mileage rate for my bike?+

No. The standard mileage rate applies to cars, vans and trucks. On a bike, deduct the actual business-use costs of the bike or e-bike, repairs and gear instead.

Will I get a 1099 from the delivery app?+

Apps pay through various forms: a 1099-K only above $20,000 and 200 transactions, or a 1099-NEC for $2,000 or more in 2026. All earnings must be reported even with no form.

Do I owe quarterly taxes as a courier?+

If you expect to owe $1,000 or more for 2026, pay estimates by Apr 15, Jun 15, Sep 15, 2026 and Jan 15, 2027.
