W-2 or 1099?

Most movers who work for a moving company are W-2 employees with taxes withheld. Movers who get jobs through apps or run their own small operation are usually 1099 contractors who file Schedule C and pay self-employment tax.

Home movers can deduct tips

Home movers are listed (code 809) on the IRS tipped occupation list, so voluntary tips can qualify for a deduction of up to $25,000 for 2025–2028. Tips must appear on your W-2, a 1099 or Form 4137.

Overtime deduction for eligible W-2 crews

FLSA overtime-eligible employees can deduct the premium half of time-and-a-half, up to $12,500 ($25,000 joint), phasing out above $150,000 MAGI ($300,000 joint). Helpers and loaders at interstate movers using trucks over 10,000 lbs are often exempt from federal overtime and can't use it.

1099 movers: truck and gear

If you're self-employed, dollies, straps, blankets and business vehicle use are deductible. Business miles are 72.5 cents (Jan–Jun 2026) or 76 cents (Jul–Dec 2026).

Retirement either way

W-2 movers can use an employer 401(k) if offered (up to $24,500 in 2026) plus an IRA up to $7,500. Self-employed movers can open a SEP IRA or Solo 401(k).

Mover questions, answered

Do I still pay tax on moving tips?+

Tips are still subject to Social Security and Medicare tax, but qualified tips can be deducted from federal income tax, up to $25,000, whether or not you itemize. You need a valid Social Security number, and married couples must file jointly.

Do I have to report cash tips to my employer?+

Yes, if they total $20 or more in a month: report them in writing by the 10th of the next month. Unreported tips are figured on Form 4137.

I move furniture through an app. Do I pay quarterly taxes?+

If you expect to owe $1,000 or more, 2026 estimates are due April 15, June 15 and Sept. 15, 2026, and Jan. 15, 2027.

Can I take both the tips and overtime deductions?+

Yes, if you qualify for each. They are separate deductions with separate caps, both claimed on Schedule 1-A. The overtime deduction only covers the federally required premium, and only if you're not exempt from FLSA overtime.
