W-2 or 1099?

Cleaners booked through apps or who run their own client list are usually 1099 contractors who file Schedule C and pay self-employment tax. Cleaners on a cleaning company's payroll are W-2 employees, and someone a single family hires directly may be that family's household employee.

Home cleaners are on the tipped list

Home cleaners are listed under Home services on the IRS tipped occupation list, so voluntary tips can qualify for the deduction of up to $25,000 in 2025–2028. It phases out above $150,000 MAGI ($300,000 joint).

Deduct supplies and equipment

If you are self-employed, cleaning products, vacuums and other supplies you buy for work are business expenses. Keep receipts or let bank categorization sort them.

Miles between client homes

Driving from one client to the next is business travel at 72.5 cents per mile (Jan–Jun 2026) or 76 cents (Jul–Dec 2026). Log each trip.

Your own retirement plan

Self-employed cleaners can open a SEP IRA or Solo 401(k), with up to $24,500 in 2026 deferrals for a Solo 401(k). Anyone with earned income can put up to $7,500 in an IRA ($8,600 if 50+).

House cleaner questions, answered

Are my cleaning tips tax-free in 2026?+

Tips stay subject to Social Security and Medicare tax, but qualified voluntary tips can be deducted from federal income tax, up to $25,000, on Schedule 1-A. Tips must be reported on a W-2, 1099 or Form 4137 to count.

Do I owe taxes if I'm paid in cash?+

Yes. All business income is taxable even without a 1099, and self-employment tax applies once net earnings reach $400.

Do I need to pay quarterly taxes?+

If you expect to owe $1,000 or more for 2026, pay estimates by April 15, June 15 and Sept. 15, 2026, and Jan. 15, 2027.

Am I an employee if one family pays me every week?+

Possibly. The IRS treats a household worker as the family's employee when the family controls not only what work is done but how it is done. In that case the family, not you, handles Social Security and Medicare once wages pass the IRS annual threshold. Cleaners sent by a cleaning service or running their own business are not household employees.
