Musician taxes and retirement, tuned for 2026
Gig fees, merch, streaming and teaching income all land on one return. Gigaverse helps you log business trips, connect your bank to categorize income and expenses, and estimate quarterly taxes from what you actually earn.
Where musicians typically get paid
W-2 or 1099?
Most gigging musicians are self-employed, paid by venues, clients or fans as independent contractors or in cash, so they file Schedule C and owe self-employment tax. Musicians on a payroll (orchestras, theater pits, cruise lines, theme parks) get a W-2 with taxes withheld.
Deduct gear, travel and promotion
Instruments, amps, cables, strings, repairs, rehearsal space, recording costs and promotion used for your music business are generally deductible on Schedule C. Business driving is 72.5 cents per mile for January-June 2026 and 76 cents per mile from July 1, 2026.
Tips and the performing-arts rule
Musicians are on the IRS tipped-occupation list, but performing arts is a specified service trade or business, and tips earned in one are not qualified tips. That generally rules out the 2026 no-tax-on-tips deduction for self-employed performers. All tips are still taxable income.
Plan for self-employment tax
Self-employment tax is 15.3% on 92.35% of net profit; the 12.4% Social Security part stops at the 2026 wage base of $184,500, while the 2.9% Medicare part has no cap. Half of SE tax is deductible.
Retirement options for the self-employed
A Solo 401(k) allows a $24,500 employee deferral for 2026 plus an employer contribution of roughly 20% of net self-employment earnings, up to $72,000 total; catch-ups ($8,000 at 50+, $11,250 at ages 60-63) go on top. A SEP IRA is employer-only, and an IRA allows $7,500 ($8,600 at 50+).
Musician questions, answered
Do musicians have to pay quarterly taxes?+
If you expect to owe $1,000 or more for 2026 after withholding and credits, estimated payments are due Apr 15, 2026, Jun 15, 2026, Sep 15, 2026 and Jan 15, 2027.
Is my tip jar or Venmo tip income taxable?+
Yes, all tips are taxable. Self-employed musicians generally can't use the 2026 no-tax-on-tips deduction because performing arts is a specified service business. A W-2 musician whose tips are reported and whose employer is not in a specified service field, such as a restaurant or hotel, may qualify.
Will I get a 1099 for every gig?+
Clients only have to send a 1099-NEC for payments of $2,000 or more in 2026, and payment apps send a 1099-K only above $20,000 and 200 transactions, but all income is taxable even with no form.
Can I write off my instrument?+
Generally yes, if you use it for your music business. Under 2026 rules you can often deduct the full cost in the year you start using it through Section 179 or 100% bonus depreciation, or depreciate it over time. Keep receipts and reduce the deduction for any personal use.
