W-2 or 1099?

Most security guards are W-2 employees of a security company with taxes withheld, so they do not file Schedule C for that job. Guards paid as independent contractors for private or event gigs are self-employed for that income and owe self-employment tax on it.

No tax on overtime (W-2 guards)

FLSA overtime-eligible employees can deduct the premium portion of overtime pay (generally the 'half' of time-and-a-half), up to $12,500 ($25,000 joint) for 2025-2028. It phases out above $150,000 MAGI ($300,000 joint).

Only FLSA overtime qualifies

Overtime paid only because of state law, a union contract or employer policy beyond FLSA rules does not count, and true independent contractors generally do not get this deduction.

1099 gigs need quarterly payments

If contract gigs mean you expect to owe $1,000 or more for 2026, pay estimates by Apr 15, Jun 15, Sep 15, 2026 and Jan 15, 2027, or increase W-2 withholding.

Retirement beyond the job plan

Use your employer's 401(k) if offered ($24,500 limit for 2026) and an IRA ($7,500, $8,600 at 50+). Net 1099 earnings can also fund a SEP IRA or Solo 401(k).
