Where influencers typically get paid
W-2 or 1099?
Influencers are usually independent contractors paid by brands, agencies or platforms, so no tax is withheld and income goes on Schedule C. A brand must send a 1099-NEC only for payments of $2,000 or more in 2026.
1099 thresholds changed
Payment apps and online marketplaces only have to send a 1099-K above $20,000 and 200 transactions, and businesses send a 1099-NEC for $2,000 or more of nonemployee pay in 2026, but all income is taxable even without a form.
Gifted products
Products you receive in exchange for posts are generally taxable income at fair market value, even without cash. Keep records of what you received and its value.
Business deductions
Phone, camera gear, editing apps and the business share of travel for shoots can be deductible business expenses if ordinary and necessary for your work.
Retirement options
As a self-employed creator you can open a Solo 401(k) (up to $24,500 of employee deferrals in 2026, and up to $72,000 total with employer contributions, which depend on your net self-employment earnings) or a SEP IRA, plus a traditional or Roth IRA up to $7,500 ($8,600 if 50+).
Influencer questions, answered
Do I owe taxes on brand deals under $2,000?+
Yes. The $2,000 1099-NEC threshold only decides whether a brand must send a form; all income is taxable.
When are 2026 quarterly taxes due?+
2026 estimated tax payments are due April 15, 2026, June 15, 2026, Sept. 15, 2026 and Jan. 15, 2027. You generally need to pay if you expect to owe $1,000 or more after withholding and credits.
How much should I set aside?+
Net self-employment earnings (92.35% of net profit) of $400 or more trigger self-employment tax of 15.3%. The 12.4% Social Security part stops at the $184,500 2026 wage base, counting any W-2 wages first. Half of SE tax is deductible. Federal income tax applies on top, after the $16,100 standard deduction for single filers.
Can influencers deduct health insurance?+
Self-employed people with a profit can deduct qualifying health premiums, limited to net profit, for months they were not eligible for a subsidized employer plan (their own or a spouse's).
