Where videographers typically get paid
W-2 or 1099?
Freelance videographers are usually 1099 independent contractors who file Schedule C and pay self-employment tax. Staff videographers at studios, agencies or TV stations are W-2 employees with withholding.
Expense cameras, lenses and drones
Gear used for your business can often be fully deducted in the year you start using it in 2026, through Section 179 (up to $2,560,000) or permanent 100% bonus depreciation for property acquired after Jan. 19, 2025.
Software, storage and a home edit suite
Editing software, cloud storage and subscriptions are deductible business expenses. If you edit in a dedicated home space, the simplified home office deduction is $5 per square foot up to 300 square feet ($1,500).
Mileage to shoots
Business driving is 72.5 cents per mile for January-June 2026 and 76 cents per mile from July 1, 2026. Log each trip's date, purpose and miles.
Retirement savings
A Solo 401(k) allows a $24,500 employee deferral for 2026 plus an employer contribution of roughly 20% of net self-employment earnings, up to $72,000 total; catch-ups ($8,000 at 50+, $11,250 at ages 60-63) go on top. A SEP IRA is employer-only, and an IRA allows $7,500 ($8,600 at 50+). Many freelancers may also qualify for the 20% qualified business income deduction.
Videographer questions, answered
Do freelance videographers pay quarterly taxes?+
If you expect to owe $1,000 or more for 2026 after withholding and credits, estimated payments are due Apr 15, 2026, Jun 15, 2026, Sep 15, 2026 and Jan 15, 2027.
Will clients send me a 1099?+
Clients only have to send a 1099-NEC for payments of $2,000 or more in 2026, and payment apps send a 1099-K only above $20,000 and 200 transactions, but all income is taxable even with no form.
Should I buy gear before year-end to cut taxes?+
Equipment you place in service in 2026 can often be deducted this year, but it only makes sense if you need it. A deduction lowers taxable income; it doesn't refund the full purchase price.
How much self-employment tax will I owe?+
Self-employment tax is 15.3% on 92.35% of net profit; the 12.4% Social Security part stops at the 2026 wage base of $184,500, while the 2.9% Medicare part has no cap. Half of it is deductible.
