Where video editors typically get paid
W-2 or 1099?
Freelance editors paid per project are usually 1099 contractors who file Schedule C. Editors hired on staff or through a payroll company for a production are W-2 employees with taxes withheld.
Gear and software are deductible
Editing computers, drives, monitors and software subscriptions used for business are deductible; 100% bonus depreciation is permanent for qualified property acquired after Jan. 19, 2025.
Self-employment tax
If your net earnings from self-employment (92.35% of net profit) are $400 or more, you owe 15.3% self-employment tax on them; the 12.4% Social Security part stops at the $184,500 wage base, counting any W-2 wages first.
Home edit bay
If part of your home is used regularly and exclusively for business, the simplified home office deduction is $5 per square foot up to 300 square feet ($1,500 max).
Retirement with uneven income
Self-employed people can use a Solo 401(k) ($24,500 employee deferral in 2026; $72,000 total additions cap, not counting catch-ups) or a SEP IRA (employer-style contributions on up to $360,000 of compensation), plus an IRA up to $7,500 ($8,600 at 50+).
Video editor questions, answered
Do I owe taxes if a client did not send me a 1099?+
Clients only have to send a 1099-NEC for payments of $2,000 or more in 2026, and payment apps send a 1099-K only above $20,000 and 200 transactions. All income is taxable either way.
When are quarterly taxes due for 2026?+
Quarterly estimated payments for 2026 income are due April 15, June 15 and September 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027. You generally need to pay if you expect to owe at least $1,000 after withholding.
Can I deduct my new editing computer all at once?+
Often yes, for the business-use share: 100% bonus depreciation is permanent for qualified property acquired after Jan. 19, 2025, and Section 179 allows up to $2,560,000 in 2026. A tax professional can confirm how your purchase qualifies.
Is a Solo 401(k) or SEP IRA better for an editor?+
A Solo 401(k) lets you defer up to $24,500 as the employee (plus an $8,000 catch-up at 50+, or $11,250 if you turn 60-63 in 2026) on top of employer contributions, which can help at lower profits. A SEP IRA is simpler but allows only employer-style contributions. Both cap total 2026 additions at $72,000, not counting Solo 401(k) catch-ups.
