W-2 or 1099?

Bellhops, concierges and most valets are W-2 employees of a hotel or valet company; occasional event valet shifts through apps may be 1099 contractor work.

Hospitality tips can qualify

The IRS list includes bellhops (TTOC 301), concierges (302), housekeepers (304) and parking and valet attendants (801), so voluntary tips can count toward the up-to-$25,000 deduction. Mandatory resort or service fees do not.

Cash-heavy? Keep a log

Report cash tips to your employer by the 10th of the following month if they are $20 or more for the month. Unreported tips can be reported on Form 4137, but tips never reported can't be deducted.

Overtime during peak season

If you're FLSA overtime-eligible, the premium portion of overtime is deductible up to $12,500 ($25,000 joint). Overtime paid only under a union contract above the FLSA requirement doesn't count.

Retirement through your employer and an IRA

2026 limits: $24,500 to a 401(k) ($8,000 more at 50+; $11,250 at ages 60-63) and $7,500 to an IRA.

Hotel tipped staff questions, answered

Are valet tips covered by no tax on tips?+

Parking and valet attendants are listed as TTOC 801, and bellhops, concierges and housekeepers are listed under hospitality and guest services, so voluntary tips you report can qualify.

Do housekeeping and bell staff need to report small daily tips?+

Report cash tips to your employer if they total $20 or more in a month from that employer. Keep a daily record either way.

Does the deduction lower my payroll taxes?+

No. It reduces federal income tax only. Social Security and Medicare still apply to reported tips.

Is there an income limit?+

Yes. The deduction drops by $100 for each $1,000 of MAGI above $150,000 ($300,000 married filing jointly).
