Gumroad creators (called "Suppliers" in Gumroad's terms): taxes and retirement for 2026
How Gumroad pays its creators (called "Suppliers" in Gumroad's terms), what the IRS sees, what you can deduct and how to save for retirement on your own. Gigaverse is not affiliated with Gumroad.
How Gumroad creators (called "Suppliers" in Gumroad's terms) are paid and taxed
- Classification
- Creators are independent sellers who appoint Gumroad as their non-exclusive reseller, and Gumroad is the merchant of record for those sales. Gumroad's terms say each creator is personally responsible for reporting their earnings and paying the correct amount of tax.
- Tax forms
- Gumroad's payment processor, Stripe, issues Form 1099-K to US-based sellers whose Gumroad sales exceed $20,000 in gross volume and 200 transactions in the year, matching the 2026 federal threshold. Affiliates get Form 1099-MISC instead; Gumroad's help page still says it sends one above $600, though the federal 2026 minimum for 1099-MISC/NEC is $2,000.
- Platform fees
- Direct sales cost 10% + $0.50 per transaction, plus card processing (2.9% + $0.30) or PayPal fees. Sales through Gumroad's Discover marketplace pay a flat 30% that includes processing. After $20,000 in paid sales in a calendar month, new direct sales that month drop to 5% + $0.50.
- Payouts
- Gumroad pays to a US bank account daily (if eligible), weekly, monthly or quarterly, with a $100 minimum and a 7-day hold on weekly, monthly and quarterly schedules. US bank payouts go out on Thursdays. Eligible US creators can take instant payouts of up to $10,000 for a 3% fee, and PayPal payouts (used where bank payouts aren't supported) cost 2%.
What Gumroad creators (called "Suppliers" in Gumroad's terms) can deduct
- Gumroad fees (10% + $0.50 per direct sale, 30% on Discover sales) plus card and PayPal processing fees
- Payout fees, such as the 3% instant payout fee or the 2% PayPal payout fee
- Commissions earned by your Gumroad affiliates, which are included in your 1099-K gross
- Software and subscriptions used to create and market products (design, video editing, email tools)
- Computer, camera, microphone and other equipment used to make your products
- Home office space used regularly and exclusively for your creator business
Watch out for
- The 1099-K reports gross volume, including Gumroad's fee, sales tax and VAT collected at checkout, and affiliate commissions, so it won't match your payouts. Reconcile it with Gumroad's sales CSV or the 1099-K transaction report.
- Gumroad is the merchant of record and collects and remits sales tax and VAT on your sales, so back that tax out of your 1099-K gross when you reconcile. If you already file sales tax returns, report Gumroad sales as resales using Gumroad's reseller certificate.
- Sales through your own connected Stripe or PayPal account are left off Gumroad's 1099-K. Stripe or PayPal reports them separately.
- Gumroad assigns transactions to the tax year when the funds became available, not the sale date, so late-December sales can show up on the next year's form.
Federal rules for 2026
Platform payouts are business income
AdSense, subscriptions, tips from fans, sponsorships and affiliate commissions are self-employment income, so self-employment tax applies on top of income tax.
Free products count
Products or services you receive in exchange for content are income at their fair market value, the same as cash.
Gear and software
Cameras, lighting, microphones, editing software and a business share of your phone and internet are deductible. Larger equipment can often be written off in the year you buy it.
Quarterly estimated taxes
No one withholds tax from self-employment income, so you generally pay estimates four times a year if you expect to owe $1,000 or more. For 2026 income the federal dates are April 15, June 15 and September 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027. Paying 100% of last year's tax (110% if your AGI was over $150,000) in four equal installments avoids the underpayment penalty.
A worked example
| Self-employment tax | $12,717 |
|---|---|
| Self-employment tax per quarter | $3,179 |
| Solo 401(k) maximum | $41,228 |
| SEP IRA maximum | $16,728 |
