Where baristas typically get paid

Coffee shop payroll (W-2)SquareToastClover

W-2 or 1099?

Baristas are generally W-2 employees, so taxes are withheld and you file with your W-2 rather than Schedule C.

Tip jar and card tips

Baristas are named under fast food and counter workers (TTOC 107), so voluntary cash and card tips, including pooled tips, can count toward the up-to-$25,000 deduction. Tips must be reported to qualify.

Report pooled cash tips

Report cash tips to your employer by the 10th of the following month unless they are under $20 for the month. Keep a daily tip record.

Overtime deduction if you qualify

FLSA overtime-eligible employees can deduct the premium portion of overtime pay, up to $12,500 ($25,000 joint), for 2025 through 2028.

Use your employer's plan

If your employer offers a 401(k), you can defer up to $24,500 in 2026. Outside a plan, an IRA allows $7,500.

Barista questions, answered

Do baristas qualify for no tax on tips?+

Yes. The IRS tipped-occupation list names baristas under fast food and counter workers (TTOC 107), so voluntary tips you receive and report can be deducted, up to $25,000 on Schedule 1-A, for 2025 through 2028.

My tips come split from a pool. Do they count?+

Yes. The IRS includes tip sharing in qualified tips, as long as customers chose to tip.

Do I have to file a different form to claim it?+

You claim it on Schedule 1-A of Form 1040 and can take it with the standard deduction. Married couples must file jointly.

Is a Roth IRA a good fit for a barista?+

Many workers in lower tax brackets consider a Roth IRA because qualified withdrawals in retirement are tax-free. For 2026 you can contribute up to $7,500; single filers phase out at $153,000-$168,000 MAGI. This is educational, not advice.
