How Shiftsmart Partners are paid and taxed

Classification
Independent contractor only: Shiftsmart says Partners are not employees of Shiftsmart or its customers, and its Partner Terms of Service create an independent-contractor relationship with no withholding or benefits.
Tax forms
Shiftsmart issues Form 1099-NEC, mailed by January 31 and available through a secure Stripe email link; for payments made in 2026 the federal threshold is $2,000.
Platform fees
No commission on Partners is published. Instant Pay costs $1.99 per transaction (free for Gold and Silver members); standard transfers and the automatic weekly Sunday transfer are free.
Payouts
The Partner Terms say Partners are paid within seven days after a task is completed, through Stripe to a linked bank account; Instant Pay to a debit card takes about 30 minutes, and standard transfers take 3-5 business days.

What Shiftsmart Partners can deduct

  • Instant Pay fees ($1.99 per transfer unless Gold or Silver)
  • Workers' compensation or occupational accident insurance premiums Partners buy (the terms require coverage where the law does)
  • Vehicle costs (gas, maintenance, insurance) or standard mileage for non-commuting business driving (72.5 cents/mile Jan-Jun 2026, 76 cents/mile from July 1, 2026)
  • Business-use share of the phone and wireless data plan the app requires
  • Tools, equipment, and materials Partners must supply at their own expense

Watch out for

  • Shiftsmart's help center still cites the $600 threshold; for 2026 payments no 1099-NEC is required below $2,000, but you must report all income.
  • Shift bonuses or rewards paid for your work count as taxable income.
  • Shiftsmart withholds no income, Social Security, or Medicare tax, so plan quarterly estimates and 15.3% self-employment tax once net earnings reach $400.
  • The terms make Partners responsible for insurance and for every device, vehicle, and gas cost, so keep receipts and a mileage log to support Schedule C deductions.

Federal rules for 2026

No tax on tips (2025 to 2028)

Eligible workers in occupations that customarily receive tips can deduct up to $25,000 of qualified tips a year from federal taxable income, whether or not they itemize. The deduction shrinks for modified AGI over $150,000 ($300,000 joint). It is income tax only: Social Security and Medicare still apply to tips.

Tips must be reported

Employees must report cash tips of $20 or more in a month to their employer by the 10th of the next month. Tips you did not report go on Form 4137. Only reported tips count toward the deduction.

Overtime deduction

W-2 workers who are owed overtime under federal law can also deduct the overtime premium, up to $12,500 a year ($25,000 joint), with the same income phase-out.

Roth IRA

Without a workplace plan, a Roth IRA lets you save up to $7,500 in 2026 ($8,600 at 50 or older) and withdraw qualified money tax-free in retirement, subject to income limits.

A worked example

A bartender with $30,000 in wages and $15,000 in reported tips
Tips deduction$15,000
Federal income tax without the deduction$3,220
Federal income tax with it$1,420
Federal income tax saved$1,800

Single filer, standard deduction, 2026 brackets. Payroll taxes on tips are unchanged. Computed from 2026 IRS limits (Notice 2025-67, Rev. Proc. 2025-32) and the SSA wage base.
