W-2 or 1099?

TikTok creators are self-employed; TikTok and brands pay without withholding, so income goes on Schedule C and is subject to self-employment tax.

LIVE gifts and tips

Voluntary tips a viewer sends after already having access to your content (for example LIVE gifts) can count as qualified tips for digital content creators (TTOC 209): up to $25,000 a year for 2025-2028, phasing out above $150,000 MAGI ($300,000 joint). Payments required for access and the platform's cut don't count, and specified service businesses (performing arts is a listed field) are excluded, so confirm with a tax professional.

Brand deals and affiliate commissions

Sponsorships, affiliate commissions and gifted products are taxable business income. Payment apps and online marketplaces only have to send a 1099-K above $20,000 and 200 transactions, and businesses send a 1099-NEC for $2,000 or more of nonemployee pay in 2026, but all income is taxable even without a form.

Deduct your gear

Phones, ring lights, mics and editing apps used for content are business expenses. 100% bonus depreciation is permanent for qualified property acquired after Jan. 19, 2025; personal-use portions are not deductible.

Retirement options

As a self-employed creator you can open a Solo 401(k) (up to $24,500 of employee deferrals in 2026, and up to $72,000 total with employer contributions, which depend on your net self-employment earnings) or a SEP IRA, plus a traditional or Roth IRA up to $7,500 ($8,600 if 50+).

2026 estimated tax payments are due April 15, 2026, June 15, 2026, Sept. 15, 2026 and Jan. 15, 2027. You generally need to pay if you expect to owe $1,000 or more after withholding and credits.

What deduction do I get before income tax?+

Single filers get a $16,100 standard deduction in 2026 ($32,200 married filing jointly). Self-employed creators can also deduct half of their self-employment tax and may qualify for the QBI deduction of up to 20% of qualified business income.
