W-2 or 1099?

Freelance writers and copywriters are typically 1099 contractors or sole proprietors filing Schedule C. Staff writers are W-2 employees, and book royalties may be reported on a 1099-MISC.

Deduct the tools of the trade

Laptops, software, research subscriptions, professional memberships and newsletter platform fees used for your writing business are generally deductible.

Home office

The simplified home office deduction is $5 per square foot of space used regularly and exclusively for business, up to 300 square feet ($1,500).

1099 thresholds, including royalties

Clients send a 1099-NEC for $2,000 or more in 2026, while royalties are reported on a 1099-MISC at $10 or more. All income is taxable even without a form.

Retirement for writers

A Solo 401(k) allows a $24,500 employee deferral for 2026 plus an employer contribution of roughly 20% of net self-employment earnings, up to $72,000 total; catch-ups ($8,000 at 50+, $11,250 at ages 60-63) go on top. A SEP IRA is employer-only, and an IRA allows $7,500 ($8,600 at 50+).
