Fiverr freelancers (also called sellers): taxes and retirement for 2026
How Fiverr pays its freelancers (also called sellers), what the IRS sees, what you can deduct and how to save for retirement on your own. Gigaverse is not affiliated with Fiverr.
How Fiverr freelancers (also called sellers) are paid and taxed
- Classification
- Fiverr says freelancers are independent contractors, not Fiverr employees, who offer services through Gigs. Some business clients get worker-classification tools to check contractor vs. employee status for long-term work.
- Tax forms
- Fiverr collects a W-9 from U.S. freelancers, and eligible freelancers can download Form 1099-K from Earnings > Financial Documents. Fiverr doesn't publish its own cutoff; the 2026 federal rule requires a marketplace 1099-K only when payments exceed $20,000 and 200 transactions. Under IRS rules, payments that run through a third party network are reported on 1099-K rather than 1099-NEC.
- Platform fees
- Fiverr keeps 20% of every transaction, including tips, so freelancers receive 80% of the client's cleared payment. Optional costs include Seller Plus Standard ($25 per month) or Premium ($49 per month), Fiverr Ads (cost per click) and a 1% fee for Early Payout.
- Payouts
- Earnings clear 14 days after an order is completed (7 days for Seller Plus, Top Rated and Pro freelancers). You can withdraw up to $5,000 per transaction via PayPal ($0 fee, $1 minimum), bank transfer via Payoneer ($1 fee, $20 minimum) or a Payoneer account ($3 fee, $10 minimum); the Fiverr Revenue Card is open only to existing cardholders.
What Fiverr freelancers (also called sellers) can deduct
- Fiverr's 20% service fee on orders and tips, when your reported income includes it
- Seller Plus subscription fees ($25 or $49 per month)
- Fiverr Ads spend and the 1% Early Payout fee
- Withdrawal fees (for example $1 for bank transfer via Payoneer or $3 to a Payoneer account)
- Software, AI tools and computer equipment used to deliver Gigs
- Home office space used regularly and exclusively for your Fiverr business
Watch out for
- Fiverr does not issue invoices for the 20% commission it withholds; keep your Statement of Earnings (which shows Fiverr fees) and CSV exports to support the deduction.
- Under IRS rules a Form 1099-K reports gross payments without subtracting fees or refunds, so reconcile any 1099-K against your Statement of Earnings before filing.
- Fiverr takes 20% of tips too, and tips are still taxable income.
- No tax is withheld from Fiverr earnings, and all income is reportable even without a 1099-K, so plan quarterly estimated payments.
Federal rules for 2026
Self-employment tax
On top of income tax, self-employed people pay 15.3% on 92.35% of net profit: 12.4% Social Security up to the 2026 wage base of $184,500, plus 2.9% Medicare with no cap. Half of it is deductible.
All income counts, form or no form
Clients and marketplaces send 1099-NEC or 1099-K forms only above IRS reporting thresholds, but every dollar of freelance income is taxable whether or not a form arrives.
Home office and tools
If you use part of your home regularly and only for work, the simplified home-office deduction is $5 per square foot up to 300 square feet. Software, equipment and a business share of your phone and internet are deductible too.
Quarterly estimated taxes
No one withholds tax from self-employment income, so you generally pay estimates four times a year if you expect to owe $1,000 or more. For 2026 income the federal dates are April 15, June 15 and September 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027. Paying 100% of last year's tax (110% if your AGI was over $150,000) in four equal installments avoids the underpayment penalty.
A worked example
| Self-employment tax | $12,010 |
|---|---|
| Self-employment tax per quarter | $3,003 |
| Solo 401(k) maximum | $40,299 |
| SEP IRA maximum | $15,799 |
Federal figures only. Income tax comes on top; the quarterly tax calculator estimates both. Computed from 2026 IRS limits (Notice 2025-67, Rev. Proc. 2025-32) and the SSA wage base.
