How Handy (pro platform now Angi Services) pros (independent service professionals) are paid and taxed

Classification
Handy became part of Angi in 2018, and in 2022 the Handy for Pros app became Angi Services for Pros. Angi Services says it isn't an employer and that all pros in its network are independent contractors, not employees.
Tax forms
Handy pros are paid through Angi Services, which issues Form 1099-K through Stripe when it processes more than $20,000 in gross payments and the federal transaction-count test is met for you in a year; some states have lower thresholds. No income tax is withheld.
Platform fees
Angi Services keeps part of the booking price customers pay. Pros otherwise pay only avoidable fees: $10–$40 for late cancellations and up to $50 for a no-show. Optional fees include expedited payment (up to $1.99 per day; $1.99 per Cash Out Now) and Pro Premium (up to $8 per week).
Payouts
Jobs are batched by Monday–Sunday week, with fees deducted and tips added, and paid by direct deposit. Payment is issued after the week ends and usually reaches your bank by the following Monday. Cash Out Now ($1.99, up to $1,000 per request, 1–3 business days to land) and Daily Cash Out pay sooner.

What Handy (pro platform now Angi Services) pros (independent service professionals) can deduct

  • Cleaning supplies, tools and equipment you bring to jobs
  • Business mileage between jobs: 72.5¢/mile through June 30, 2026 and 76¢/mile from July 1, 2026 (or actual transit fares)
  • Cash Out Now, Daily Cash Out and Pro Premium fees
  • Business share of the phone and data plan you use for the Angi Services for Pros app
  • Liability insurance and any required trade licenses
  • Qualified tips (up to $25,000 for 2025–2028) if your occupation, such as home cleaning or handyman work, is on Treasury's tipped-occupation list

Watch out for

  • "Handy Pro is now Angi Services." Your 1099-K comes from Angi Services through Stripe (email from [email protected]), not under the Handy name.
  • Customer tips are added to your weekly payout and are taxable. The tips deduction is capped at your net income from the business where you earned them.
  • Cancellation and no-show fees come out of your payouts, so keep your payment history to reconcile deposits against any 1099-K.
  • Angi Services withholds no taxes, so plan quarterly estimated payments if you expect to owe $1,000 or more.

Federal rules for 2026

Self-employment tax

On top of income tax, self-employed people pay 15.3% on 92.35% of net profit: 12.4% Social Security up to the 2026 wage base of $184,500, plus 2.9% Medicare with no cap. Half of it is deductible.

All income counts, form or no form

Clients and marketplaces send 1099-NEC or 1099-K forms only above IRS reporting thresholds, but every dollar of freelance income is taxable whether or not a form arrives.

Home office and tools

If you use part of your home regularly and only for work, the simplified home-office deduction is $5 per square foot up to 300 square feet. Software, equipment and a business share of your phone and internet are deductible too.

Quarterly estimated taxes

No one withholds tax from self-employment income, so you generally pay estimates four times a year if you expect to owe $1,000 or more. For 2026 income the federal dates are April 15, June 15 and September 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027. Paying 100% of last year's tax (110% if your AGI was over $150,000) in four equal installments avoids the underpayment penalty.

A worked example

A freelancer with $85,000 of net profit in 2026
Self-employment tax$12,010
Self-employment tax per quarter$3,003
Solo 401(k) maximum$40,299
SEP IRA maximum$15,799

Federal figures only. Income tax comes on top; the quarterly tax calculator estimates both. Computed from 2026 IRS limits (Notice 2025-67, Rev. Proc. 2025-32) and the SSA wage base.
