Consultants in Boise, ID: taxes and retirement for 2026
For independent consultants and fractional executives billing clients directly in Boise, ID. Idaho has a flat 5.3% state income tax for 2026. Here are the 2026 rules, a worked example and the official sources.
What's different in Boise
- Local income tax
- No city income tax in Boise.
- Greater Boise Auditorium District Tax (short-term lodging)
- Short-term lodging of 30 days or less inside Boise and Garden City owes this district tax on top of Idaho sales tax and the 2% travel and convention tax. Hosts need a district tax permit unless they rent only through marketplaces that collect and remit the tax for them. The state page does not list the rate, so it is omitted here.
- City business license
- No general business license. Boise licenses only certain activities (for example massage establishments, security companies, business drivers, taxis, vendors and tree pruning). However, the city requires a Home Occupation permit to run a business from your home.
- Also worth knowing
- No city income tax: the Idaho State Tax Commission lists only resort-city sales taxes as city option taxes, and Boise is not on that list (https://tax.idaho.gov/taxes/sales-use/sales-tax/local-sales-tax/city-sales-tax). Tax Foundation's 2023 primer (secondary source, https://files.taxfoundation.org/20230222173518/Local-Income-Taxes-A-Primer-2023.pdf) does not list Idaho among the states whose localities levy income taxes. The licensed-activity list and Home Occupation permit rule come from the city's Small Business Start-Up Guide (dated February 2026), which also says Ada County licenses some uses, such as solicitors and peddlers. City licensing page: https://www.cityofboise.org/departments/city-clerk/licensing. Travel and convention tax rate: https://tax.idaho.gov/taxes/taxes-on-sales/travel-and-convention-tax. We found no city ordinance for gig, app-based or freelance workers. Population is the U.S. Census Bureau Vintage 2025 estimate for July 1, 2025 (https://www2.census.gov/programs-surveys/popest/datasets/2020-2025/cities/totals/sub-est2025.csv).
Idaho rules for consultants
- State income tax (2026)
- Idaho has a flat 5.3% state income tax for 2026. Idaho Code 63-3024 taxes Idaho taxable income at 5.3% above an inflation-indexed zero bracket (the 2025 Form 40 instructions use $4,811 for single filers; the 2026 amount was not yet published). No 2026 enacted bill changed the rate. Anyone required to file also pays a $10 permanent building fund tax (2025 Form 40 instructions: https://tax.idaho.gov/document-mngr/forms_efo00089).
- State estimated tax
- Idaho doesn't require individuals, including the self-employed, to make estimated payments. Voluntary payments can be made any time with Form 51 or Quick Pay. No required installment schedule. To get the automatic six-month filing extension, you must pay at least 80% of current-year tax or 100% of prior-year tax by the April due date (Idaho State Tax Commission, Apr. 6, 2026: https://tax.idaho.gov/pressrelease/need-an-extension-to-file-your-idaho-income-tax-return-5). Form Form 51.
- Idaho worker classification (direction and control)
- Under Idaho law, an independent contractor is free from direction and control over how the work is done. Some Idaho laws also require that contractors run an established business with their own expenses and income.
Federal rules for 2026
Solo 401(k) up to $72,000
A one-person consultancy can contribute a $24,500 employee deferral plus an employer share of about 20% of net self-employment earnings, up to $72,000 in 2026, plus an $8,000 catch-up at 50 or older ($11,250 at ages 60 to 63).
The S-corp trade-off
Electing S-corp status can cut payroll tax, but the salary you pay yourself also sets your Solo 401(k) room. Run both sides before you elect.
Quarterly estimated taxes
No one withholds tax from self-employment income, so you generally pay estimates four times a year if you expect to owe $1,000 or more. For 2026 income the federal dates are April 15, June 15 and September 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027. Paying 100% of last year's tax (110% if your AGI was over $150,000) in four equal installments avoids the underpayment penalty.
Self-employment tax
On top of income tax, self-employed people pay 15.3% on 92.35% of net profit: 12.4% Social Security up to the 2026 wage base of $184,500, plus 2.9% Medicare with no cap. Half of it is deductible.
A worked example
| Self-employment tax (sole proprietor) | $21,194 |
|---|---|
| Solo 401(k) maximum | $52,381 |
| SEP IRA maximum | $27,881 |
| Payroll tax saved as an S-corp on a $75,000 salary | $9,719 |
| Solo 401(k) maximum as that S-corp | $43,250 |
Federal figures only, before state and local taxes. Simplified: excludes the QBI deduction and the 0.9% Additional Medicare Tax. Computed from 2026 IRS limits (Notice 2025-67, Rev. Proc. 2025-32) and the SSA wage base.
