State income tax (2026)
Iowa has a flat 3.8% state income tax for 2026. Senate File 2442 (2024) set a flat 3.8% rate, which applies to all taxable income in 2026.
State estimated tax
Required if you expect to owe $1,000 or more in Iowa tax on income without withholding. Starting with tax year 2026 the threshold rose from $200 to $1,000. Differs from federal: April 30, June 30, and September 30, 2026, and January 31, 2027. Form IA 1040ES.
Minimum wage (2026)
$7.25 an hour; tipped cash wage $4.35 an hour. Iowa's rate matches the federal $7.25. If you make $30 a month or more in tips, the employer may pay as little as $4.35 an hour but must make up any shortfall below $7.25. Employers may pay an initial wage of $6.35 an hour for the first 90 days. The law generally covers employers grossing at least $300,000 a year.
Marketplace contractor law (Iowa Code ch. 93)
Contractors using a digital marketplace platform are independent contractors under all state and local law if they agree to that in writing and bear their own expenses. The platform also can't set required hours or bar them from other work or platforms. Freight and parcel delivery are excluded.
Construction contractor registration
Individual and business construction contractors earning at least $2,000 a year from construction must register with Iowa DIAL ($50 fee). In-state contractors need an Iowa unemployment insurance number to register, even with no employees.
