Mercari sellers: taxes and retirement for 2026

How Mercari sellers are paid and taxed

Classification
Mercari's terms say items are sold directly by independent third-party sellers and that the terms create no employment, agency or partnership relationship with Mercari. Sellers range from casual sellers of personal items to self-employed resellers.
Tax forms
Mercari collects a W-9 and files Form 1099-K when a seller has more than $20,000 in gross payments and more than 200 transactions in the year (the federal threshold reinstated for 2025 and in effect for 2026), and then also files copies with states that have 1099-K filing requirements. The gross amount includes the item price, buyer-paid shipping and buyer-paid sales tax for completed transactions and isn't reduced for Mercari's selling fee; buyer-paid service and payment processing fees are excluded.
Platform fees
A 10% selling fee on the item price plus buyer-paid shipping for listings created or updated on or after January 6, 2025, with no payment processing fee on those listings. Direct Deposit is free (a $2 fee applies only to failed deposits) and Instant Pay costs $3 per transfer. Buyers separately pay a 3.6% Buyer Protection fee.
Payouts
Funds reach your Mercari balance once the buyer rates the order (buyers have 72 hours after delivery). You can withdraw once a day by free Direct Deposit (processed the next business day, typically arriving within 5 business days) or by Instant Pay to an eligible debit card ($3, typically within minutes, up to $600 a month).

What Mercari sellers can deduct

  • Mercari's 10% selling fee
  • Shipping labels and other shipping costs you pay
  • Instant Pay fees ($3 per transfer)
  • Cost of goods sold for items bought to resell
  • Packing supplies and listing equipment
  • Mileage for sourcing trips (72.5 cents per mile Jan-Jun 2026, 76 cents per mile from July 1, 2026)

Watch out for

  • Mercari's 1099-K includes buyer-paid shipping and buyer-paid sales tax and isn't reduced for your selling fees, so back those out using your Gross Sales Report.
  • If a sale would push you over the reporting threshold and you haven't submitted a verified W-9, the item can't be bought with Add to cart or Buy now; buyers can only make an offer.
  • Gains on online sales are what's generally taxable; personal items sold for less than you paid generally aren't taxed, but the loss isn't deductible either.
  • A transaction counts for the 1099-K on the date it completes, when the seller rates the order or Mercari auto-rates it, so a late-December sale can land on the next year's form.

Federal rules for 2026

Entity choice changes your taxes

A single-member LLC is taxed like a sole proprietorship unless it elects S-corp status. The S-corp can lower payroll tax but adds payroll, a separate return and a reasonable-salary requirement.

Retirement as a tax lever

With no employees, a Solo 401(k) allows up to $72,000 in 2026. With employees, a SEP IRA or a 401(k) must generally cover eligible staff too.

Quarterly estimated taxes

No one withholds tax from self-employment income, so you generally pay estimates four times a year if you expect to owe $1,000 or more. For 2026 income the federal dates are April 15, June 15 and September 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027. Paying 100% of last year's tax (110% if your AGI was over $150,000) in four equal installments avoids the underpayment penalty.

Self-employment tax

On top of income tax, self-employed people pay 15.3% on 92.35% of net profit: 12.4% Social Security up to the 2026 wage base of $184,500, plus 2.9% Medicare with no cap. Half of it is deductible.

A worked example

A solo founder with $200,000 of profit in 2026
Self-employment tax as a sole proprietor$28,234
Solo 401(k) maximum as a sole proprietor$61,677
Payroll tax saved as an S-corp on a $100,000 salary$12,934
Solo 401(k) maximum as that S-corp$49,500

Federal figures only. S-corps add running costs (payroll, an 1120-S return, state fees) not shown here. Computed from 2026 IRS limits (Notice 2025-67, Rev. Proc. 2025-32) and the SSA wage base.
